Spanish football goalkeeper – Iker Casillas

Íker Casillas Fernández, born May 20, 1981 in Móstoles, Madrid, Spain, is a Spanish football goalkeeper. He currently is Real Madrid’s and Spain’s first choice goalkeeper.

Born in Madrid in 1981, Casillas’ entire career has been spent with his hometown club, whom he joined as an eight-year old. Part of the Spanish teams which won the UEFA-CAF Meridian Cup and FIFA World Youth Championship in 1999, his breakthrough year came in 1999/2000, when he replaced the injured Bodo Illgner and played in Madrid’s UEFA Champions League triumph in an all-Spanish final against Valencia CF where his senior team mates Raúl González, Fernando Morientes and Steve McManaman scored in a 3-0 win. Loss of form subsequently allowed César Sánchez to take the numbrt 1 jersey but Casillas reclaimed the limelight after substituting the veteran in the 2001/02 Champions League final against Bayer Leverkusen and preserving Madrid’s 2-1 lead with a series of fine saves.

Again the first choice in 2002/03, an injury-free season saw Casillas play in 15 of his side’s Champions League games as well as all 38 Primera División matches as Madrid reclaimed the Spanish championship.

Still only a youngster in goalkeeping terms, Iker Casillas has none the less gained a huge reputation in European football. A shot-stopper par excellence, the Real Madrid player is gradually developing the commanding presence in his area which could yet see him become an all-time great.

Following his international debut against Sweden, Casillas was an unused substitute at Euro 2000. However, he was first choice two years later at the 2002 World Cup in Korea/Japan, and enjoyed hero status after Spain knocked out the Republic of Ireland in a penalty shoot-out to advance to the quarter-finals.

Casillas played in all eight Group 6 fixtures during Euro 2004 qualifying, conceding just four goals. He then kept goal in both legs of the play-off victory against Norway, keeping a clean sheet in Oslo. He then backstopped his country at the Euro 2004 finals.

In 2003/04, Casillas was virtually ever-present as Madrid relinquished their crown and lost the Spanish Cup final, missing just one league game. However, despite Casillas’ stellar performances every week, Real Madrid suffered two trophyless seasons in 2003/04 and 2004/05. Although Casillas was widely considered the team’s most consistent performer during this lean patch, there was much gossip and speculation regarding a possible transfer to another club. Manchester United was the name that regularly cropped up in newspapers. It was widely believed that Casillas was unhappy with his salary, which was paltry in comparison to the amounts earned by some of the team’s bigger stars. However, to the relief of Real Madrid’s millions of fans, the saga ended when the player signed a contract extension on the November 30, 2005, tying him to the club till 2011.

Casillas is expected to be his country Spain’s first-choice goalkeeper during the 2006 World Cup to be held in Germany, and is considered one of the best goalkeepers in the world, on a par with-if not better than-the likes of Gianluigi Buffon, Petr Cech and Dida.

Was it easy or difficult for you to be convinced to become a model?
It wasn’t really that hard for me to be convinced, because I had always thought that the experience one could have while modeling had to be great. I had to be convinced that I had the right look which I still have to do.

What should the viewers know about you?
That I am one of the goofiest persons you could ever know. Look at me; I have clown hair! I really love hanging out with my family. We all have a good time together.

What would you like to be doing in modeling that would make you really feel good?
My dream modeling assignment, other than getting to partake in Abercrombie and Fitch with Bruce Weber, would be Polo. I would want Bruce Weber to be the photographer and the models to be Gisele and Tyra Banks. The location would be a cabin in Colorado during the winter.

Describe to us what fun to you is?
Being around people who aren’t afraid to let loose and be themselves.

What would bring a smile to your face?
Being around my friends and acting stupid always gets me going. Owning my own business is what would make me happy.

Who are the people that influence you the most? Who are your personal heroes?
My parents have had the most influence in my life. They would have to be my personal heroes.

Future plans?
My plans are to get my architectural degree and pursue furniture design. I plan to travel for the next year and take classes online. I am headed to New York in January and would like to go to Australia at some point.

Heath Black, born May 28, 1979, is an Australian rules footballer.

The 177cm utility is noted for his solid work on a wing and in the midfield. Beginning his career in 1997 he was seen as a bright prospect and several years down the track that has been proven correct. Black was recruited at no. 12 in the 1996 AFL Draft and began his career with Fremantle in 1997. After spending 5 seasons at the Dockers, and after finishing 2nd in the George Doig Medal (best and fairest) in 2001, he was traded to St Kilda.

He was a vital part of the Saints’ midfield during his relatively brief time there, and at the end of 2003 requested to be released so he could go back to Perth. However, the Saints lodged their list too late and Black stayed on with St Kilda for another season. At the end of 2004 he was eventually traded back to the club which he began his career at.

In 2005, Black proved to be one of the few shining lights in Fremantle’s mediocre season. Along with Peter Bell, Shane Parker and Matthew Pavlich, he was among the most consistent players at the club, and he finished 3rd behind them in the George Doig Medal (Parker and Bell tying for second position).

Eugen Bauder was born in 1986 in Alma Ata, the capital of Kazakhstan with german heritage, for those who have never heard of it. He grew up in a city close to Basel and attended school there.

Eugen Bauder, the new “Charming Boy” in the model scene, could hardly believe what has been happening to him. At the beginning, the short-spoken Eugen could not believe that he had the charms to be a model. His photos however spoke differently, so when he sent them to some agencies, the responce astonished him.

Eugen spreads unlimited charms, and – which is more important- his photogene is so stunning. His photos speak for themselves: not only with his flawless body and a six-pack, thanks to 14 years swimming; but also with his excessive talent, once being innocent and shy, at the other time being lascivious and passionate.

His very first photos were not even published, yet famous international model agencies have showed their interests. In his still-short modelling career, he has already worked with some famous photographers, such as Mario Testino, Tony Duran, and Karl Simone (12 page editorial for Genre Magazine). He has the cover shot and an editorial story in Hommes Uomo Magazine.

He currently resides in Los Angeles to work and collect some new exciting experiences. Eugen, who has played theatre passionately during his high-school years, was also hoping to meet someone who can help him on building his career in theatrical community. After his two month stay in LA, he will soon be seen in fashion shows in Milan and Paris.

Everything happens just like a dream for Eugen. He still can hardly believe how quickly he has been able to grasp his dreams. He himself said “That’s what I want. To ‘Live my dreams!’, and that’s what I’m doing right now.”

Regardless of what he has been achieving, he is still a normal 19 year old teenager. He goes to movies, hooks up with some friends, goes to house parties, and listens to R&B.

Considering the early buzz in his still short modelling career, we should expect to see much more of his face from this new photographers’ darling.

Eric Carlson, aka ‘erock’, born in Chicago, IL, is an American motivational speaker, founder of Leading Edge Power and fitness model who has appeared in numerous fitness magazines.

Carlson grew up in Round Rock Texas where he excelled at sports. Although his early years were complicated by tragedy in the form of domestic violence, heavy drug use and alcoholism, he was determined to rise above the suffering. He attended college in Arkansas and Iowa where he played football.

Illness sidelined the young athlete when he was diagnosed with dangerously high toxicity levels. The doctors eventually had to perform surgery and his life began to transform. After his recovery, Carlson was determined to learn the proper way to maintain perfect health and fitness.

With a move to Southern California in the early ‘90’s, Carlson was well on his way to re-claiming his life. Japanese gymnast – Hiroyuki Tomita

Hiroyuki Tomita, born November 21, 1980, in Osaka Prefecture, is a Japanese gymnast. He is a top Japanese gymnast with three Olympic medals from the 2004 and 2008 Olympics.

Tomita’s exciting gymnastics with his elegant execution, plus his rugged good looks have won him many fans.

Tomita began gymnastics at the age of eight with his mother getting him started into the sport. He attended Ronan High School and began competing in the All-Japan Highschool Games in 1996. In this first competition, he ranked 10th in the all-around. The next year saw a meteoric rise in Tomita’s competition results with a 1st in the all-around.

Tomita made his debut in world championships competition at the 2002 World Championships. On this competition, he placed 4th in the event finals of still rings. The following year, he was a member of the Japanese men’s team which won a bronze in the 2003 World Championships.

In his first Olympics in 2004, Tomita led the men’s team in an upset when the Japanese team captured the Olympic title for the first time since 1976, winning over the highly favored Chinese men’s team.

In the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Tomita finished sixth in the all-around qualifier and his Japan men’s team received a total of 278.875 points (just seven points shy from China’s), which was good for the silver medal.

Evandro Soldati, born April 17, 1985 in Brazil, is a Brazilian male supermodel.

Soldati started modelling in 2002 when his mother signed him up for a Ford contest in his native Brazil. He has since shot onto the fashion scene by starring in numerous big campaigns for Louis Vuitton and Valentino.

In addition, Soldati has done campaigns for Abercrombie & Fitch and Dolce & Gabbana and is also the main male model in the Giorgio Armani ad campaigns in 2007.

In an interview with Globo Magazine, Soldati was quoted as saying that he enjoyed modeling because of its perks the job brought him. He said, “You get to travel the world, and it is always free. You get to know different places, and I have learned English and a bit of Italian as well.”

Gymnastics Athlete – Gervasio Deferr

Gervasio Deferr was born on July 11, 1980 in Barcelona. At the 2004 Athens Olympic Games held in August, Spain’s Gervasio Deferr became the only individual champion of the 2000 Sydney Games to successfully defend his or her title.

Deferr won the gold medal on vault, as he had done four years ago. He also became Spain’s first gold medalist of the Athens Games.

Deferr, a free spirit who sports a tattoo of a devil on his torso, said during podium training in Athens that he knew what he would need to repeat his title. “Good luck, and not a lot of nervousness,” he noted. At age 23, Deferr was the second-youngest member of the Spanish men’s gymnastics team in Athens.

Enrique Palacios, the proud product from Venezuela is shining big on the international modeling stage. Being one of the most popular male models in Latin American countries, Enrique is nothing short of a celebrity. Best known for his campaigns for Armani, Tommy Hilfiger and Dolce & Gabbana, Enrique is making more headlines by marrying British supermodel Naomi Campbell.

Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Enrique grow up with his younger brother in a fun loving family. Enrique was discovered in his hometown, Caracas in 1995, while Karin Models France was looking for new talents. An agent approached him and proposed the idea of modeling in France. His doubts about living in another country and leaving his family behind rejected the offer. After all the persuasion from the agency and the compromise made on Enrique’s part, he eventually landed in Paris France on January 24th, 1996.

Enrique stayed in Paris for only one year due to personal discomfort and unfamiliarity with French fashion, then moved to New York, joining up with Wilhelmina agency. “In Paris, I made many clients, but it is not easy to have an accent there. I changed the base to New York, where people open the doors to you if you work for them.” In New York, he shared an apartment near Square Union with his then fiancee, a Spanish model named Eugenia Silva. The life was as he recalled as living in the room with a scaling wall, where he got up each morning to prepare himself soon after a cup of white coffee.

The most notable success of Enrique has to be his four-year run of the spokes model role for Italian fashion house Giorgio Armani. Enrique Palacios’s personal understanding for fashion industry gives him eyes and knowledge in terms of campaign selections and right attitude towards work. His self-confidence corresponds to his marketing strategy simply by ignoring the competition in the industry. Being considered a personal friend of Giorgio Armani, there have been some ups and downs over the years of cooperation between the two, including the incident that Enrique didn’t respond to Armani’s initial invitaion due to the tragedy of Vargas in Venezuela.

“Many models have managers that decide by them. I prefer to have the freedom to choose,” says Enrique. The independence that Enrique solely demands in his early career has cost him the job with Hugo Boss, and made him realize the harsh reality of modeling business. When both Dolce & Gabanna and Hugo Boss proposed to him for ad campaigns, Enrique followed up with both companies at the same time, which made the two major fashion houses compete for his spot. The subsequent action was the dropout of Hugo Boss from the competition, and Enrique lost his best opportunity to ever model for one of the biggest male fashion brand names in the world.

The growing influence of Latin culture over the rest of the world is no longer a barrier for Enrique to enter the main stream entertainment business. Currently taking private acting lessons, Enrique is aiming to be an actor in Hollywood. His also has an affiliation with Maria Conchita Alonso, with whom shared an editorial of the magazine W, dedicated to expand the popularity of Latinos into the world. The other hobbies that Enrique has is to ride his Harley motorcycle and eat Sushi.

Over the years, Enrique has appeared in many campaigns, including Armani, Tommy Hilfiger, Dolce & Gabbana, Ferre, Marshal, White Label, and among others. He resides between New York, Milan and Paris, becoming a regular air flier. His busy schedule cost him the relationship with his former fiancee. Gabe Kapler was born on August 31, 1975. A workout buff who has appeared on the cover of fitness magazines (and whose mother works at a Jewish pre-school), Kapler was a member of the Boston Red Sox World Championship team in 2004, having also played with Boston in 2003 when they reached the AL Championship Series. In November 2004, Gabe signed a contract with the Yomiuri Giants to play the 2005 campaign in Japan.

Kapler has a Star of David tattooed on one leg and the post-Holocaust motto “Never Again” on the other.

On September 26, 2001, Los Angeles Dodgers star Shawn Green sat out a game that fell on Yom Kippur. When asked whether or not he would do the same, Kapler said, “What Shawn is doing is commendable..That makes my decision that (much) more difficult. Nobody is more proud of their heritage than I am and nobody is more proud of being Jewish than I am. It’s something I have to mull over. I have mixed emotions. I don’t want to appear hypocritical because… I don’t know what I would be doing if I wasn’t playing baseball that day. It might not be going to the synagogue.” Kapler ended up playing on September 26, which was a day game and ended before the start of Yom Kippur. Gabe went 3-4 with two home runs that day, but the Rangers lost to Seattle, 7-5.

In 2004, Green again sat on on the holiday while Kapler played. Kapler has called himself a role model for young Jewish fans, but said of his decision, “I am not really a practicing Jew. It would be selfish to be a practicing Jew on only one day.”

Career Highlights
In 1998, Gabe earned Minor League Player of the Year Honors from Baseball Weekly, The Sporting News and USA Today. That same year, he was the Southern League MVP as well as the Southern League All-Star Game MVP. During his rookie season with Detroit (1999), he hit 18 home runs and knocked in 49 RBI in 130 games. After the season, the Tigers traded Kapler and other players to Texas for a package including former league MVP Juan Gonzalez.

Playing for the Rangers in 2000, Gabe had a 28-game hitting streak for Texas, a team record and the longest in the majors for the 2000 season. He ended the year hitting a robust .302, with 14 homers and 66 RBI in only 116 games. His 32 doubles were second in the league, and he also added 8 stolen bases.

In 2001, Kapler played well for the struggling Rangers (73-89, last in the AL West) and was the team’s regular center fielder. In 134 games (third most on the club), he hit .267 (129-483) with 17 HR, 72 RBI, 77 runs, 29 doubles, and a .437 slugging percentage — he also led the team with 23 stolen bases. Gabe, who played exclusively in center field for Texas, had a marvelous defensive year with a .997 fielding percentage (1 error in 352 total chances), and 8 assists.

Kapler started the 2002 season as “the most athletic and the most versatile” of all the Texas outfielders, according to his manager, Jerry Narron; which was quite a tribute, considering Gabe’s outfield teammates included such established stars as Juan Gonzalez and Carl Everett. The Rangers didn’t play him regularly, though, and just before the July 31 trading deadline, Gabe was traded to the Colorado Rockies.

He, and the Rockies, hoped the change of scenery would help him realize his enormous potential. During the remainder of 2002 season, he played 40 games with Colorado and hit a rousing .311 (53-119) with three triples, two home runs and 17 RBI. The Rockies, though, were only good enough to finish 73-89 and in fourth place in the NL West.

Kapler began the 2003 season with the Colorado Rockies. Gabe appeared in 39 games and hit .224 (15-67) with four RBI and 10 runs scored before being optioned to AAA Colorado Springs on June 4. Kapler played in 10 games with Colorado Springs, hitting .200 (6-30), and was released on June 20. Four days later, Gabe was signed by the Boston Red Sox. He made a sensational debut with the Bosox on June 28, going 4-5 with three RBI against the Florida Marlins. In his second start, Kapler continued his torrid hitting, going 3-4 with two HR, three runs scored and four RBI.

Kapler finished the 2003 season with the Red Sox and had a batting average of .291 (46-158) with four HR, 23 RBI and 29 runs in 68 games. Boston finished in second place in the AL East with a record of 95-67 and clinched the AL wild card. Earlier this season, Gabe said of playing in Boston, “Hitting in a lineup like this, its easy to see good pitches. Success breeds confidence. This has been an incredible experience all the way through…”

In the Divisional Series, the Red Sox made an improbable comeback against the Oakland A’s, down two games to none, they won the final three games to capture the series. In the AL Championship Series, the Sox played their dreaded rivals, the New York Yankees, and lost a terrific, tightly-contested series in seven games.

During the 2004 season, Boston clinched the wild card spot in the American League (98-64 record) and then swept the Anaheim Angles in the AL Divisional Series.
