‘Unknown’ – Thrilling Joyride!

I have always enjoyed watching Liam Neeson play these action roles where his character normally gets the loose end of the rope.  He plays yet, another character with the same dilemma in the movie ‘Unknown’.  I actually watched the movie without much expectation, just expecting it to be the normal action type of movie.  It is actually, but there is a twist in the end, as the character of Liam Neeson starts to unravel.  I didn’t sense it at first, but soon I realized that his character just had to be finished off because in his line of work, loose ends just have to be finished off!  I first learned about this type of plotline in that classic French spy caper – La Femme Nikita – where all trained assassins who go awry – have to be disposed of!

Well, since he’s playing the main character, Liam Neeson, could not be disposed of – and that’s how the story unravels. With the help of an unexpected heroine, played by Diane Kruger, they both try to solve the mystery of Liam Neeson’s real identity.  After that car crash which caused his coma, he has to find out who he really is! And that’s where all the fun begins!

I love seeing Berlin in winter! It’s cold and dreary yet beautiful to see.  The rave dance scene, the Brandenburg gate, the sleek, modern trains, the characters speaking in German, seeing all taxis to be Mercedes Benzes – all these create an atmosphere of dread for Liam Neeson’s character.

Well, there is collateral damage always for action movies of this type – but at least here, I did care about what happened to each of them – from the nurse, to that African taxi driver to that former Stasi employee.  All these characters help Liam find out who he is – and they all had to pay for their lives doing it!

Kuno Becker

If a guy this gorgeous turned out to be my teacher in my college Political Science class, I would have perfect attendance!!  Kuno Becker plays a teaching assistant in From Prada to Nada, and I can’t blame Alexa Vega’s character for falling quickly to him.  He just hs this disarming smile and that body to die for!  He actually has a shirtless scene in the movie!  Hurrah!

Kevin Bacon

I was flipping through channels last night and I came upon this HBO movie, Taking Chance, which starred Kevin Bacon.  I learn later on that he won a Golden Globe for this performance, and deservedly so.  It’s the most subtle yet moving performance from an actor that I’ve seen in years!  Kevin just did the role with so much dignity and respect for everyone involved in it, especially that as the movie unrolled, we learn that Chance is actually the name of the soldier Kevin’s character was taking home.

On one side, the story is tragic since behind its premise, the life of a promising young man who as yet, has still more to offer the world, has been snuffed out.  On the other hand, I am amazed, even shocked, by the outpouring and support Kevin’s character gets from everyone around him, when they know what he is doing. It is actually very moving.  It’s all there in those little scenes with all these ordinary people paying respects.  And you know this scene is multiplied many times since there have been many casualties of war for THAT war.

Nothing in the movie is trivialized that’s why it works.  The patriotism can sometimes get to me knowing how very patriotic Americans are but I can’t blame them.  A fallen son is hard to fathom as it is, but to die for the country is an even greater sacrifice.

Jude Law in ‘Enemy at the Gates’

I don’t know why I never bothered to watch this movie during its theater run here.  It’s right up my alley since I love World War II stories and it involves the Russians.  And Jude Law is here too!  The story is quite gripping since Jude plays the role of a sniper who becomes a hero to his fellowmen in Stalingrad because of his war exploits.  Because of this, the German top sniper, played by Ed Harris, wants him dead.  The movie is heart-wrenching because all the main characters die, except for Rachel Weisz and of course, Jude’s.  For me, the most heart-wrenching was when the kid was hanged!  That was quite a shocker!  It’s a beautiful love and historical story of heroism at a very trying time in world history!

Josh Duhamel

Both are easy on the eyes, so watching this movie is a breeze!  Well, the way they get together and have a baby is a bit unique but what happens after, follows the time-tested Hollywood plot where two very attractive people fight first and fight more, before they find out they’re in love with each other!  It’s something we’ve seen over and over and over again in most rom-coms!

But what do I care!  As long as they show Josh and his yummy body, I’m hooked and watching!   I did shed a tear in the scene where the baby calls Katherine’s character ‘Mama!’. And the scene where Josh flirts, nice!  Something I could use and emulate!  His character is really a smooth player!

And really!  Katherine Heigl playing a 30+ woman who has no boyfriend?  Unrealistic and unbelievable!  She’s so pretty and her character in this movie is a successful businesswoman-baker!  Guys would fall all over themselves hooking up with her!

Joross Gamboa

Joross came out in this year’s edition of Folio, and you can see his transformation from a twinkie, to a real hunk, in these pictures!  I actually like him, as an actor!  I’ve seen him last in One Night Only, where he never gets to take his shirt off, but is very funny in that movie.  He tries his best to foil the indecent proposal of Chokoleit’s character!  I just hope they cast him in more movies.  Or maybe in a gay indie movie!
