‘Unknown’ – Thrilling Joyride!
I have always enjoyed watching Liam Neeson play these action roles where his character normally gets the loose end of the rope. He plays yet, another character with the same dilemma in the movie ‘Unknown’. I actually watched the movie without much expectation, just expecting it to be the normal action type of movie. It is actually, but there is a twist in the end, as the character of Liam Neeson starts to unravel. I didn’t sense it at first, but soon I realized that his character just had to be finished off because in his line of work, loose ends just have to be finished off! I first learned about this type of plotline in that classic French spy caper – La Femme Nikita – where all trained assassins who go awry – have to be disposed of!
Well, since he’s playing the main character, Liam Neeson, could not be disposed of – and that’s how the story unravels. With the help of an unexpected heroine, played by Diane Kruger, they both try to solve the mystery of Liam Neeson’s real identity. After that car crash which caused his coma, he has to find out who he really is! And that’s where all the fun begins!
I love seeing Berlin in winter! It’s cold and dreary yet beautiful to see. The rave dance scene, the Brandenburg gate, the sleek, modern trains, the characters speaking in German, seeing all taxis to be Mercedes Benzes – all these create an atmosphere of dread for Liam Neeson’s character.
Well, there is collateral damage always for action movies of this type – but at least here, I did care about what happened to each of them – from the nurse, to that African taxi driver to that former Stasi employee. All these characters help Liam find out who he is – and they all had to pay for their lives doing it!
