NEW YORK – Andy Murray reached a second successive US Open semi-final on Wednesday after Croatia’s Marin Cilic squandered a set and 5-1 lead to lose their quarter-final 3-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-2, 6-0.

Third seed Murray goes on to face either world number one Roger Federer, the five-time champion who beat him in the 2008 final, or Czech sixth seed Tomas Berdych for a place in Sunday’s final.

Wednesday’s win was Murray’s seventh in eight meetings with 12th-seeded Cilic, whose only victory over the Briton came in the fourth round in New York in 2009 when he raced to a straight-sets triumph.

But after twice serving for the second set, the 23-year-old Cilic’s game fell to pieces, being broken in the fifth and seventh games of the third set.

Murray, the Olympic champion and Wimbledon runner-up to Federer this year, was quickly 4-0 ahead in the fourth set as Cilic, who came into the match having spent over three hours more on court than the Scot, wilted.

Murray broke three more times in the fourth set with the Croat winning just four points on his own serve.

Cilic ended the three-hour encounter having won just three more games from 5-1 ahead in the second set. – AFP

He would go on to make five appearances at Germany 2006, scoring a goal in Italy’s 2-0 defeat of Ghana in the group phase. He thus became the second Udinese player to pick up a FIFA World Cup™ winners medal in the Italy No15 shirt, midfielder Franco Causio being the first 24 years earlier.

Iaquinta has continued to progress since completing a move to Juventus in 2007, and despite stiff competition for places remains well in contention for striking duties with the Azzurri. Iaquinta looks good in a suit (and probably really good out of one), but he also looks good as a champion who helped his team win the 2006 World Cup. He’s ready for another victory. And another haircut, it seems.

Tom Sturridge, born January, 1986, in London, England, is an English actor.

Sturridge was born in London to director Charles Sturridge and actress Phoebe Nicholls. Grandson of thespians Anthony Nicholls and Faith Kent, he is the eldest of three children.

Sturridge began as a child actor, in the television adaptation of Gulliver’s Travels” directed by his father. In 2004, he appeared in two big films, “Vanity Fair” and “Being Julia”. In 2005, he starred on the TV mystery drama, “A Waste of Shame: The Mystery of Shakespeare and His Sonnets”.

Sturridge was originally cast as the lead in the sci-fi trilogy Jumper. However two months into production New Regency and 20th Century Fox fearing the gamble of spending over $100 million on a movie starring an unknown actor, replaced him with the “more prominent” Hayden Christensen.

Sturridge is currently working on a new film, “Maestro”, a story of a young pianist and his piano teacher set in the 1960s in the Australian outback.

American Film and Television Actor and A Musician – Thomas Dekker

Thomas Alexander Dekker, born December 28, 1987, in Las Vegas, Nevada, is an American film and television actor and a musician, best known for portraying John Connor in the Terminator spin-off series The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

Dekker is also a singer and has written and produced two studio albums, the first of which is due for release later this year. He is probably best known for his role as Zach on Heroes or as Nick Szalinski on Disney’s Honey, I Shrunk the Kids: The TV Show.

Starting his acting career at age six, Dekker was first seen in the soap The Young and the Restless. His first movie job was starring in Village Of The Damned playing David, one of the possessed children. He then appeared in Star Trek Generations.

Later in 1997 Thomas became a regular on the Disney Channel Original Show Honey, I Shrunk the Kids: The TV Show based on the movie of the same name. He played Nick Szalinski on the show for three years. After the show ended in 2000 he went on to appear in many popular television shows including Run of the House, Fillmore!, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, House, Boston Public, Reba and 7th Heaven. He appeared in movies such as Campus Confidential and An American Tail: The Mystery of the Night Monster.

Dekker has won three Young Artist Awards for his work in the The Land Before Time movies and one for his guest appearance on Boston Public. He has also been nominated for a DVD Premiere Award and a Video Premiere Award.

In 2006, Dekker landed a recurring role on NBC’s hit show Heroes playing the character of Zach. He played the character for 11 episodes before leaving the show when he won the lead role of John Connor in FOX’s new show The Sarah Connor Chronicles starring opposite Lena Headey and Summer Glau.

Upcoming projects include the movies Brothers of Blood and From Within. His first studio album is expected to be released later this year. The album, Psyanotic, will be Dekker’s first studio album. He has also recently completed work on his second studio album currently titled Protean.

Berdych sends Federer crashing out of US Open

NEW YORK – Roger Federer saw his dream of becoming the first man in 87 years to win six US Opens destroyed by big-swinging Czech Tomas Berdych Wednesday in the Swiss legend’s earliest New York defeat in nine years.

The 17-time Grand Slam title winner, bidding to reach his 33rd Grand Slam semi-final and ninth in a row at the US Open, was beaten 7-6 (7/1), 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 by sixth-seeded Berdych.

“It couldn’t be better,” Berdych said. “There’s no better moment so far than this one.”

It was Federer’s worst defeat at the tournament since losing to David Nalbandian in the fourth round in 2003.

Berdych, who went into the quarter-final with a 4-11 record against the world number one, will now face British third seed Andy Murray for a place in Sunday’s title match.

“I’ll just try to bring something from today and try to add something a little more for my next match,” Berdych said.

The 26-year-old Czech has reached the last four in New York for the first time while Saturday will be his first Grand Slam semi-final since he reached the Wimbledon final in 2010.

That was the tournament where he also defeated Federer in the quarter-finals.

In an extraordinary reversal of fortune, Wednesday’s clash was Berdych’s first appearance in a night match on the main stadium.

Wimbledon champion Federer, by contrast, went into the tie with a perfect 21 wins in his night-time outings.

There was no sign of the drama to come when Federer, who hadn’t played since Saturday as a result of Mardy Fish’s decision to withdraw from their fourth-round clash, broke to lead in the first game of the quarter-final.

But Berdych levelled at 3-3 before romping through the tie-break, taking the opener with his fifth ace.

The big Czech broke for a 1-0 lead in the second set with Federer under siege, having to save two break points in the fifth game.

His resistance cracked, however, under the relentless barrage as a brutal forehand, on the back of two double faults by the top seed, made it a double-break for 5-2.

Federer retrieved one of the breaks in the eighth game before Berdych served it out with a love game in the 10th.

Berdych was 1-0 with a break in the third before Federer pulled it back at 3-3 when the Czech suddenly looked vulnerable with a third double fault of his own.

Federer held to love for 4-3, broke for 5-3 and then claimed the third set when Berdych failed to chase down a drop shot as the top seed looked to pull off a third fightback from two sets to love down in Grand Slams this year.

But Berdych settled himself to break for 5-3 in the fourth set and give himself a chance to serve for the match.

He went comfortably to three match points and claimed a famous win when Federer dumped a lame service return into the net, the last of his uncharacteristic 40 unforced errors. – AFP

Todd Cahoon, born September 15, 1973 in San Jose, California, is an American actor, best known for his role as Jack Porter on the MyNetworkTV series “Watch Over Me.”

Cahoon graduated from Boston University Conservatory in 1997. He received a degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts.

5-foot-10 Cahoon made his acting debut in 1991 in the series “Baystate.” He landed his big break in 2007 when he secured a lead role in the series “”Watch Over Me” opposite Ms Universe beauty Dayanara Torres.

After having shown early promise in Lorient’s youth team, Yoann Gourcuff entered Rennes’ academy in 2001, at the same time as his dad Christian was appointed coach of the club. He appeared to have adapted extremely well to his new surroundings, scoring in his first full appearance in the UEFA Champions League against AEK Athens, but thereafter was unable to establish himself as a first-team regular due to the form of stars such as Kaka, Clarence Seedorf, Andrea Pirlo and Gennaro Gattuso, Gourcuff made do at first with his bit-part role, but that would diminish even further the following year.

Japanese Actor – Takeshi Kaneshiro

Takeshi Kaneshiro was born on October 11, 1973, in Taiwan of Japanese and Taiwanese parents. This unique background led to Kaneshiro being fluent in several languages, namely Mandarin, Japanese, Cantonese, Taiwanese, and English. Kaneshiro spent his childhood in Taiwan. His mixed background caused problems for him, and he was bullied at school by his fellow students. He had problems fitting in, and felt like an outsider both at his Japanese school and in his Taiwanese neighbourhood. For this reason he later moved to the Taipei American School.

Kaneshiro started his rise to stardom by making commercials during his school years, and at the age of fifteen was given the opportunity to be a pop star by a Taipei A&R company. In 1992, he launched a successful singing career in both Mandarin and Cantonese. As is traditional with Asian pop stars, Kaneshiro was offered roles in films, his first being in Taiwanese comedies. When given the chance, he eschewed the usual pop fodder in favor of quirky character parts. Internationally-acclaimed director Wong Kar-Wai worked with Kaneshiro on Chungking Express (1994) and Fallen Angels (1995), and speaks highly of his depth and versatility.

Kaneshiro’s screen idol looks belie his talents; reportedly, Wong and Kaneshiro collaborated on ideas for some scenes, and Kaneshiro’s role in Fallen Angels as a son missing his father is perhaps one of the best and most loved in Wong Kar-Wai’s oeuvre. Another notable role of Kaneshiro’s was in Lee Chi-Ngai’s Lost and Found (1996), opposite Kelly Chen and Michael Wong. Kaneshiro’s humorous, but deeplly felt turn as a finder of lost items was the centerpiece of this touching film.

After a sucessful run of films in Hong Kong, Kaneshiro was spotted by a Japanese TV producer who gave him a role in the unusual miniseries, God Please Give Me More Time (1998), about a musician who falls in love with an HIV-positive young girl. The controversial show was a huge success in Japan and sparked his Japanese film career. His subsequent Japanese films, Sleepless Town (1998) and Space Travelers (2000), continued to boost his profile in the territory. Kaneshiro also returned to Hong Kong for the hit romantic film Tempting Heart (1999), opposite Gigi Leung, and the romantic fantasy Lavender (2000), again with Kelly Chen.

Most recently, Kaneshiro starred in the 2002 Japanese box office smash The Returner, and worked opposite Gigi Leung again in the Hong Kong hit Turn Left, Turn Right (2003). Kaneshiro has also found success as an international print model for the designer label Prada, and appears extensively in advertisements all over Asia. (JamesPercy 2004)

Injury-hit England look too strong for Moldova

LONDON (Reuters) – England, hit by injuries to key players, are still favourites to start their World Cup qualifying campaign with a win against Moldova in Chisinau on Friday.

Defender Ashley Cole, who would have won his 99th England cap on Friday, and striker Andy Carroll were the latest players to withdraw from the squad after being injured at the weekend, and while Cole should return for next Tuesday’s game against Ukraine at Wembley, Carroll is likely to be out for six weeks.

Other absentees include striker Wayne Rooney and midfielder Scott Parker, but England will go into the Group H match in good spirits following their 2-1 friendly win over Italy in Berne last month.

Apart from losing on a penalty shoot-out to Italy in the quarter-finals of Euro 2012 in June, England manager Roy Hodgson is unbeaten in seven matches over 90 minutes since taking over on May 1.

And with England improbably ranked third in FIFA’s world rankings, compared to Moldova’s 141st, anything other than an England win will be a major surprise.

In an online debate with fans on Tuesday night, the coach was asked whether he had had the chance to pick his ideal starting line-up yet because of so many injuries.

Hodgson, 65, said: “Maybe not, we’ve been hampered by injuries to very important players. We lost Gareth Barry and Frank Lampard, for example, before the Euros, and Wayne Rooney wasn’t available for the first couple of games.

“In the Italian game I decided to leave out one or two of the obvious senior players who I thought would have been important during the qualifiers.

“I don’t think that I’ve been able to pick an ideal team as there have always been some important players missing.”

Even with their injuries, England should repeat their wins over Moldova in the qualifiers for the 1998 World Cup, when England won 3-0 in Moldova in September 1996 and 4-0 at Wembley a year later.

Moldova have never qualified for the World Cup and have won only two of the 38 qualifiers they have played. They have not won any of their past 13 over the past seven years.

Their record in the recent qualifying competition for the European Championship was not much better: they won three and lost seven of their 10 games, but two of those wins were against San Marino and the other a 2-0 victory over Finland.

Moldovan coach Ion Caras told the website moldova.sports.md on Wednesday: “We do have confidence in our strength and our chance — however, this is slimmer than England’s.”

San Marino, Poland, Ukraine and Montenegro complete the make-up of Group H.

Although Rooney and Carroll are out of the side, England have plenty of attacking options.

Jermain Defoe, who should make his 50th appearance for England, should lead the line, with either Daniel Sturridge, Danny Welbeck or Theo Walcott in support.

Defoe came on as a substitute and scored the winner in England’s 2-1 victory over Italy in Berne, his 16th goal for his country.
