International Model – Reichen Lehmkuhl
A graduate of the Air Force Academy, a captain in the Air Force, a successful entrepreneur, an international model, a winner of CBS’ Amazing Race, a Gay Rights Advocate.. all these and Reichen is only 32.
Reichen was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, to a policeman and a nurse. His parents were divorced by the time he was five and his mother raised him and his older brother as a single mom. Because of the divorce and financial problems, they started out pretty poor. Then his mother met his stepfather — he was in Cincinnati on a business trip from Boston — and eventually they were married.
When Reichen was eight, his whole family moved to Boston to live with him til the age of 18. They lived a modest lifestyle, but did have a summer home and a winter home in Maine.
It is quickly apparent that once Reichen sets a goal, it is only a matter of time before he reaches it. He has now set his sights on acting as Reichen pursue it as a career. Since winning the Amazing Race, Reichen has caught the eye of several casting directors and has already appeared on Frasier, The Drew Carey Show and The Young & The Restless.
Prior to Reichen’s professional acting debut, he was playing the role of his life while in the Air Force. Not wanting to face a court martial for being gay, Reichen had to live in two different worlds. One world where he had to watch everything he did and said for fear of being outed; the other world where he was completely free to be himself.
“One of the hardest things for me to reconcile was the fact that I was completely open with my family and friends but faced the very real possiblility of being court marshaled and going to jail if I was open with my ‘work’ colleagues.”
As Reichen explains, “The don’t ask don’t tell policy is so contradictory to what the Air Force and all the armed forces stand for. They say they are all about honor, integrity and honesty but they force you to lie in order to serve your country.”
It was the contradictions in this policy which ultimately led Reichen to opt out of the Air Force once he completed his commitment.
Once out of the Air Force, Reichen had to figure out what he was going to do. Having been part of the very structured environment for so long, it was a big adjustment to be able to make decisions for himself but it was also extremely liberating. Reichen felt the time was right for him to make a move to Los Angles and begin the next chapter of his life.
Reichen joined the Amazing Race TV show with his ex-partner. Reichen believes his military training was extremely helpful in his winning the show’s million dollar prize.
“Discipline and strategy are in my blood and it just carried over to the show and put us over the top.”
It’s that same determination and focus which will propel Reichen to reach the next target he has locked in on.
