Highly creative, Reyes has great vision on the field. At 20 years of age, his ball handling skills and knowledge of the game are astounding.

Reyes has stated that the one club he would never play for is Betis Sevilla, cross-town rivals of his former club Sevilla FC. Reyes signed with Sevilla FC at the age of 15 having rocketed through the youth ranks. At 16 he made his first appearance coming off the bench at La Romerada in Zaragoza. Twenty-one goals over four seasons and the other clubs were taking notice. Sevilla FC coach Joaquin Caparros was eager to hang onto his prodigal son, but an Arsenal offer worth up to $36 million US based on appearances and performance was too much for Sevilla to turn down.

Reyes has had a tough time adjusting to the English style of play. With two league goals in 13 Arsenal appearances and 7 starts, Wenger has maintained that the youngster will continue to see ample playing time.

Following his 2000/2001 season with Sevilla, Reyes made several appearances with the Under 19 and Under 21 Spanish squads. His first appearance for Spain’s national side came against Portugal in 2003 with his first international start three days later against the Ukraine. Reyes has two goals for his country, both against Armenia in Spain’s final match of the 2004 Eurocup qualification stage. He also appeared in their 2-1 playoff in Spain against Norway last November.

With only 23 players to choose, Iñaki Sáez has been forced to pick between an overwhelming number of talented strikers. Perhaps Sáez thinks that Reyes is too young, maybe a little too much of an ‘individual’ at times. His showing with Arsenal since Janaury hasn’t exactly been a glaring success. Whatever the reason, Reyes will without a doubt be taking center stage for Spain in the near future.
