Rugby Athlete – Dan Carter
Dan Carter, born March 5, 1982 in Christchurch, is a New Zealand rugby union footballer. He is tagged as the New Zealand version of David Beckham.
Carter plays for the Crusaders in the Super 14 and for Canterbury in the Air New Zealand Cup. In August 2006, Carter landed a penalty from 62m against South Africa, one of the biggest kicks ever recorded in a test match.
Carter was a member of the title-winning Crusaders Development side in 2002, and was the top point-scorer for New Zealand at the under-21 World Championship in South Africa, with 72 points, including 25 against England. He made his provincial debut against Marlborough in 2002, and made his debut for the Crusaders in 2003 against the Hurricanes. That same year he made his All Black debut at age 21 in Hamilton, scoring 20 points.
Carter was then included in New Zealand’s 2003 Rugby World Cup squad to Australia, where he first gained serious international attention. Carter spent much of the latter stages of the tournament on the bench leaving New Zealand without a specialist goal-kicker.
After Carter’s stellar performance in the second All Blacks test against the British and Irish Lions on the Lions 2005 tour of New Zealand, he was hailed as the next big thing in world rugby.
Carter has receive many awards as Player of the Year such as 2004 Rebel Sport Super 12 Player of the Year; 2004 Kelvin Tremain Memorial Trophy for Player of the Year; 2005 Kelvin Tremain Memorial Trophy for Player of the Year; 2005 IRB International Player of the Year and 2005 International Rugby Players Association Player of the Year Award.
Carter has also received attention off the field due to his underwear modeling for Jockey.
