Filipino-German Model – William Devaughn

William Devaughn, born in Bundingen, Germany, is a Filipino-German model who came to fame for his McDonald’s commercial in the Philippines, pitching the “McRice Burger.”

This Surgical Technician graduate started his career as model in the US when he moved to California where his mestizo looks and sexy body landed him jobs for editorial fashion layouts for Robinsons May and Macy’s, among others, and parts in music videos.

Not until Devaughn visited Manila, Philippines, did he achieved great success. He just came over to Manila with friends, who have been to the city a couple of times, for vacation. The visit would be more permanent as he was spotted by a talent scout and coaxed him to take a shot at modeling and acting in television commercials.

Devaughn’s first assignment was a commercial for McDonald’s, pitching the “McRice Burger” which shot him to fame and stardom in the Philippines. With his great smile and humble personality, he landed another big commercial campaign for a toothpaste brand, “Close-up”. This then followed by many more commercials such as Century Tuna and Revicon Ion.

Aside from modeling, Devaughn also works as a host for the Philippines’ TV Network, “ABS-CBN”.

Victor Basa, born June 6, 1985, is a Filipino model, actor, and host.

Basa began his modeling career at the age of 19, and made his first TV appearance in 2004 in a cracker commercial.

In 2005, Basa gained commercial visibility in the Philippines when he became a model for clothing retailer Penshoppe. His other modeling credits include Sunsilk Touchflicks TVC, Greenwich Commercial and Tropicana Commercial.

In 2006, Basa was invited to sign on with Star Magic, the talent management agency affiliated with the ABS-CBN network in the Philippines. Soon after signing with Star Magic, Basa quickly began to appear in a number of shows on the ABS-CBN network. He became a regular host of the weekly Sunday variety show ASAP ’06; appeared in his first recurring primetime supporting role in the soap opera Crazy For You as a love interest of the leading lady portrayed by Toni Gonzaga; and landed supporting roles in two single-episode stories in Star Magic Presents.

Also in 2006, Basa was cast as a regular cast member of Abt Ur Luv. In 2007, the new MTV Philippines signed on Basa as one of the channel’s new VJs. He currently hosts MTV Timeout.

Basa is currently working on a new movie Walang Kapalit which will be released this year.

Greg Uttsada Panichkul, also known as VJ Utt, born on September 03, 1974, is an MTV VJ, model, host and actor.

Before he became the wacky but lovable video jockey in MTV Asia’s Bangkok Jam, Most Wanted, and MTV Screen, VJ Utt (pronounced “AHT”) was an exile.

Greg Uttsada Panichkul was a wild kid growing up in San Fernando, California where he was born to an American mother and a Thai father. A monk once took one look at the rowdy 17-year-old Thai-American and said the boy had “bad luck” written all over him. Hoping to change her son’s luck and his attitude, mom sent Utt to Thailand to live with grandma and to imbibe the local culture and mores. “Because I was a very naughty boy, my parents kind of left me in Thailand with absolutely no money,” he says. “So I took a modelling job to earn a plane ticket back to the States.”

Utt earned more than just plane fare. He put his burgeoning modelling and acting career on hold for two years to earn a Communications Arts degree from Thailand’s Assumption University. Then, he stuck it out in the land of his forefathers for the next eight years.

What Utt really wanted was to be a VJ. In the pre-MTV era, there was a 24-hour music channel in Thailand called Smile TV. “I saw how some of the VJs were bilingual and I knew it was something I wanted to do,” says Utt. He went to the show’s office, did a screen test, and was promptly hired. For the next three years, Utt displayed his veejaying prowess at Smile TV and even spun off two shows, one of which he co-hosted with younger brother, Jerry.

Enter MTV. “I auditioned at MTV the old-fashioned way (he sent a tape) like any other VJ wannabe,” Utt explains. An audition for Bangkok Jam was held at Bangkok’s Hard Rock Café. At that time, MTV was looking for a Chinese-speaking female VJ so Utt had to cool his heels waiting for his turn to show his stuff. He was the last applicant on the audition line that day. “I gave them all I had!” says Utt. Two nerve-wracking weeks dragged on before Utt received a call informing him that he qualified for the second round of auditions in Singapore, followed by another two weeks of hellish suspense waiting for the final verdict. He, of course, got the part.

While he enjoys being a VJ, Utt also loves acting. “Acting allows me to show my serious side,” he says. He is cast as an HIV-positive commercial sex worker in the critically acclaimed Thai drama series, Song Klam Doag Rak. The series received an award during World AIDS Day last year for its realistic portrayal of the AIDS problem facing Thailand and its inspiring message of hope.

Utt, a spokesperson for Thailand’s AIDS Awareness and Blood Donation Drive, is excited about his role. “MTV viewers, many of whom are teenagers, can really learn a lot from the drama, especially about the social issues involved in HIV/AIDS.” For his performance in Song Klam, Utt was nominated Best Actor by the Thailand Television Awards.

Tyson Beckford has come a long way from New York’s Bronx to become a cover boy and the face of Ralph Lauren. In doing so he has paved the way for up-and-coming models of colour.

So how does he handle success? “I thank God every day,” he says. “That’s all I can do. That, and try to help all those other guys who are trying to do what I did.”

Born Tyson Craig Beckford on December 19, 1971, in New York, the catwalk star had no plans to be a model as he grew up in Jamaica and the Big Apple. In fact, his exotic eyes and high cheekbones – a fascinating combination resulting from his Jamaican-Panamanian-Chinese heritage – drew ridicule from his schoolmates.

The man who would become one of People magazine’s Most Beautiful People was barely out of his teens when his striking looks caught the eye of the editor of hip hop magazine The Source in 1991. Within two years the 6ft 2in hunk had a starring role in Ralph Lauren’s Polo Sport fragrance campaign.

Before long, Tyson – who sports at least eight tattoos on his chiselled bod – was featured on the covers of dozens of magazines, had posed for top photographers Herb Ritts and Bruce Weber, and was as named VH1’s 1995 Model Of The Year. He was also praised by style icons such as Ralph Lauren who cited his “all-American look with a dramatic edge”, saying: “He conveys power, style and intelligence in a very exciting way.”

However, as a forerunner in his field, Tyson’s path hasn’t always been smooth. He once turned down a spot on the coveted Milan Fashion Week catwalk because he was the only black man invited to the event. “There are so many African-American and African men who are trying to get jobs, and they weren’t giving the jobs to them,” he said at the time. “I’m not the only brother out here trying to make it. So I didn’t go.”

But the father-of-one – his son, Jordan, was born in 1998 – soon set his sights beyond fashion stardom. Having shown off his screen presence in music videos, including Toni Braxton’s Unbreak My Heart and Britney Spears’ Toxic, Tyson also has his gorgeous brown eyes on the big screen.

After an appearance in the little-seen Boricua’s Bond and a comic turn as himself in the Ben Stiller male model spoof Zoolander, he took on higher-profile roles, including a part in Biker Boyz alongside The Matrix star Laurence Fishburne.

Breaking into Hollywood hasn’t been easy, however, for the handsome star who says his good looks are sometimes more of a hindrance than a help. “A bad day for me now is going on an audition and not getting the gig,” he says. “I’ve got to prove myself because (casting directors) think I am a pretty boy who can’t speak.”
