Essendon Bombers Football Player – Matthew Lloyd

Matthew Lloyd plays for Essendon Bombers Football Club. He plays full forward. He was recruited at the end of 1994 in a deal that saw three or four of players go to Fremantle just so they could have him. He came into the league as one of the most able full forwards to come out of under 18’s.

He made his debut in 1995, showing Australia that he was a class player. His career hit a low when a knee injury kept him out for a big part of 1996 but he made a big comeback and was Essendon’s leading goalkicker in 1997.

In 1998 saw him playing well and also kicking a lot of goals. In 1999 he was on the top for most of the season, only to drop to fourth when an ankle injury kept him out for 2 weeks. He is currently Essendon’s leading goalkicker.

An out-and-out star who performs in all conditions under all sorts of pressure. Selected in the All-Australian side at full-forward and finished second on the goalkicking table with 85 goals for the year. Kicked five goals in the preliminary final, including two under serious last-quarter heat, to almost steal the match.

Also kicked 13 goals against the Swans and seven against the Kangaroos. Leads strong and straight and if he wraps his hand around the ball, it stays put. His left-foot kicks are deadly accurate, he is smart at ground level and courageous to boot. Only turns 22 this season, so has had a big impact on the game in a short time. Averages more than three goals a game.

Player honors: 3rd best and fairest 1997, 1998; All-Australian 1998, 1999; leading goalkicker 1997, 1998, 1999; Norwich Union AFL Rising Star nominee 1996.
Brownlow Medal: 1999 votes (9); career votes (24).
