Due to his strong performance in the light-heavyweight finals, where he lost a razor-thin decision against Griffin by unanimous decision (29-28), Bonnar was awarded a contract to fight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Bonnar’s MMA record is 11-7-0 as of December, 2007. He trained in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with the legendary Carlson Gracie, under whom he received his purple belt before Carlson’s passing.
