I’m thinking as fast as I can, but it’s just not fast enough. Out here, 1,800m up in the arid Nevada desert on a dead-straight road, everything’s happening very quickly and I’m struggling to understand what’s going on. I’ve just slotted the Hennessey Venom GT into fifth gear at around 290km/h, pushed the throttle to the floor and the small, Alcantara-clad steering wheel is now wildly thrashing from side to side in my sweating fists.
I keep my foot down, hoping the car will straighten itself out, but a split-second later the monstrous 6.2-litre twin-turboed motor unleashes another huge, whistling wrecking ball of power.

As the speedo needle flashes past 320km/h, I realise something truly unbelievable is happening: the little yellow car, still accelerating faster than a bullet, is producing so much torque that both rear wheels have broken traction and started to spin. What the…?
Easing back on the throttle, the turbo wastegates burst open and the Venom GT instantly regains its composure, like a bulldog that has just bitten your arm off then fallen asleep. Unlike me. I can’t quite believe what just happened. I’ve driven pretty much every supercar on sale over the past 25 years, but not one of them has accelerated anything like the Venom. Not the Bugatti Veyron. Not even the Shelby Supercars Ultimate Aero, which I stepped out of just a few minutes before

‘I Am Number Four’ – Alex Pettyfer

‘I Am Number Four’ – Alex Pettyfer

Alex Pettyfer, the lead star in ‘I Am Number Four’ would be as comfortable in a Calvin Klein ad as he would be, fighting all his race’s alien enemies in that sci-fi movie I just mentioned.  He appears ten minutes into the movie, doing a daring speedboat flip – and his character pretty much maintains that bad boy adventurous spirit throughut the film!  And I love it!

And I love it that he gets to shed off his shirt several times, at least in the earlier portion of the movie, since it was based in Florida.  However, even if he had to have his jacket on in the Ohio portion of the movie, you cannot miss his oozing sex appeal.  This is one of those movies where they cast the perfect actor to play that badass role of a lead that would vanquish all enemies!.

For Heart Health, Focus on Risk Factors

For Heart Health, Focus on Risk Factors

Heart failure is also a form of heart disease. Heart failure implies that your heart suddenly stops beating, but that’s not the case — it refers to the diminished capacity of a damaged ticker.

Heart failure often leaves you feeling exhausted or breathless, because your heart is having trouble delivering enough blood — and the oxygen in that blood — to every part of your body.

Arrhythmia (abnormal heart rhythm) is also considered a form of heart disease. A diseased heart may begin to flutter or race and, in extreme cases, can prevent blood from properly moving through the heart’s chambers.

One way doctors predict your likelihood of getting these conditions is through a little equation called the Framingham formula, which takes a bunch of risk factors and calculates how likely you are to get coronary heart disease.

The problem is that the Framingham formula is pretty complex. So to make it easy for you, we’re going to focus on five risk factors in this article.

First, we’ll talk about the factor we all like to blame when we look at our oversized feet or our untamed eyebrows: genetics.

Lifestyle

Unlike other causes of heart disease such as genetics, gender or age, you can help prevent one major cause of heart disease — your lifestyle.

If you smoke, try your hardest to quit. Smoking increases blood pressure and damages your heart’s tissues.

Obesity is a big contributor to heart disease, so eat a low-fat diet and get exercise as often as you can, ideally for a half-hour at least four times a week.

Drink like Ben Franklin’s advice, but not like Ben Franklin’s habits — in moderation. A daily serving of alcohol may in fact improve your heart’s health

Age

On average, your heart will beat up to 3.3 billion times before its final lub-dub [source: Roizen]. Any way you slice it, a workload that heavy causes plenty of wear and tear.

As we age, not only do we have trouble finding our reading glasses, but our arteries harden, the walls of our hearts get thicker, and overall heart function decreases.

In addition to the normal effects of aging, other contributing factors like high blood pressure and lack of exercise have been in play all those years, taking their tolls as well.

All of this adds up to a pretty hefty statistic — people age 65 and older make up 83 percent of all heart disease deaths

Diabetes

Diabetes is an inability to self-regulate blood-glucose levels. It’s also a contributing cause of heart disease. Diabetics are twice as likely as nondiabetics to suffer from heart disease [source: American Diabetes Association]. Worse still, they’re five times more likely to have heart attacks

Diabetes affects many parts of the body, especially the kidneys. As systems lose full function, the heart is forced to work harder and carry even more of a load.

The inner lining of the artery is already nicked up by products in the bloodstream such as sugars and lipids, and the excess sugars in a diabetic’s blood cause even greater wear and tear. It doesn’t help when the sugary blood is being sent through the body with greater force from high blood pressure, which diabetics are also more likely to have.

Gender

When it comes to the battle of the sexes, victory favors women through simple attrition. Men are, on average, 66 years old when they have their first heart attack, and nearly 50 percent of men who have a heart attack by the age of 65 will die by the time they’re 73 .

More men in America die from heart disease than from any other single cause, and it was responsible for 28 percent of all American men’s deaths in 2003

Genetics

Genetics is a big factor in determining your likelihood of future heart disease. When it comes to the family tree, you’re most at risk if a direct relative (a parent or sibling) has had a heart attack.

If your father or brother has had one before the age of 45 — or if your mother or sister has had one before the age of 55 — you should be especially concerned.

A history of heart disease in your extended family is a factor as well.

Your genes may make you more susceptible to heart disease, but they can also make you more prone to contributing factors such as obesity, high blood pressure or high cholesterol.

African-Americans tend to have higher blood pressure, which contributes to heart disease.

In fact, studies have shown that African-Americans are twice as likely to die of heart disease than Caucasians . Native Americans, Native Hawaiians, certain Asian ethnicities and Hispanics are also at higher risk.

Doubts on suicide-anti-smoking drug Chantix link

Doubts on suicide-anti-smoking drug Chantix link

Despite earlier health agency warnings, there is no strong evidence that the anti-smoking drug Chantix raises the risk of suicidal thoughts or depression compared to other stop-smoking products, researchers reported Thursday in the British Medical Journal.

Back in July of this year, U.S. health officials ordered strong “black box” warnings be added to Chantix (also called varenicline) as well as anti-smoking drug Zyban, following more than five thousand reports of depression, hostility and other behavioral changes possibly associated with use of these drugs.

“There have been recent concerns that varenicline, a relatively new smoking cessation product, may increase the risk of suicidal behavior and suicide,” study co-author Dr. David Gunnell of the University of Bristol, UK, explained in an email to Reuters Health.

“We found no clear evidence of an increased risk of self-harm or depression associated with varenicline,” he said.

The findings stem from data on more than 80,660 would-be quitters in the UK who used different smoking cessation products between September 2006 and May 2008.

A total of 63,265 of these individuals used nicotine replacement products, 10,973 used Chantix, and 6,422 used Zyban, an antidepressant also called bupropion, which has been found to help smokers quit.

When researchers looked at medical records, they didn’t find any evidence of an increased risk of serious mental health problems (i.e., self-harm, suicidal thoughts or depression) while they were using these products and during the three months after the last prescription was filled.

Gunnell cautioned, however, that based on the size of the study, it’s still possible that Chantix does increase the risk of suicide – or even decrease it.

“Other studies should be undertaken to provide further evidence on this issue,” he concluded.

Pagani Zonda – 1999 Zonda C12

The C12 debuted at the 1999 Geneva Motor Show. It was powered by a model 190.3344 L 5,987 cc (365 cu in) Mercedes-Benz M120 V12 engine and could reach speeds of 210 mph (340 km/h). The engine produces 408 PS (300 kW; 402 hp) at 5200 rpm and 421 lb·ft (571 N·m) at 3800 rpm.

Just five of the original 6.0 L Zondas were built, though it was still available in 2002 when the C12 S debuted. One was used for crash testing, while another was a demonstrator and show car. The remainder were delivered to customers during the next three years, priced at US$320,000.

The C12 could accelerate to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 4.2 seconds and hit 100 mph (160 km/h) in 8.2 seconds. Acceleration through the quarter mile was 12.1 seconds at 124 mph (200 km/h). Lateral acceleration on the skidpad was 0.93 g, and the car could brake from 60 mph (97 km/h) in 110 feet (34 m).

Pageant Candidates- Mr. Lapu-lapu City 2011

Pageant Candidates- Mr. Lapu-lapu City 2011

In the last decade under head honcho Harley Ruedas, Ginoong Filipinas Cebu used to lord it over the Queen City of the South and the likes of Jeram Lumbab who won Ginoong Filipinas 1994, Mark Katada who became Jeram’s successor and was Ginoong Filipinas 1995, and John Lawrence Aquino who was Ginoong Filipinas Tourism 1995 and Israel Geraldo who was Ginoong Filipinas Luzon 1996, gave Harley Ruedas an unprecedented golden years … and that gave him also a monicker- the pageant organizer with a golden touch. In the span of three years Harley was grinning wide and was very proud of their achievements.
When Harley slowed down, there was a lull in Cebu’s pageantopolis … and the general malaise was felt, and their absence in the national contest was sorely missed. Manila, Pangasinan, Pampanga and Nueva Ecija didn’t have any competetion anymore; although that assure them of an easy win, their victories were not as sweet as when there was “pukpokan” on and off the stage as witness in the previous years.
Then suddenly, Cebu bounce back … although they dont have to go to Manila, they manage to organize a local contest that has all the trimmings and prestige of winning a national title … and I am referring to Mr. Cebu. We have been following the pageant, and basing from the candidates it has attracted, the pageants production values, the media coverage, their official website that can make Mr. World Philippines, Manhunt Philippines and Mr. International Philippines blush with envy … Cebu is definitely in the winning spree.
And now … there’s Mr. Lapulapu City being launched, and again basing from the candidates “face value” the pageant is indeed a perfect foil to the fire and magic of Mr. Cebu. And to the organizers of Mr. Lapulapu … guys we are watching! Good Luck!

Beyond the Brain

Beyond the Brain

The ancient Egyptians thought so little of brain matter they made a practice of scooping it out through the nose of a dead leader before packing the skull with cloth before burial.

They believed consciousness resided in the heart, a view shared by Aristotle and a legacy of medieval thinkers.

Even when consensus for the locus of thought moved northward into the head, it was not the brain that was believed to be the sine qua non, but the empty spaces within it, called ventricles, where ephemeral spirits swirled about.

As late as 1662, philosopher Henry More scoffed that the brain showed “no more capacity for thought than a cake of suet, or a bowl of curds.”

Around the same time, French philosopher René Descartes codified the separation of conscious thought from the physical flesh of the brain.

Cartesian “dualism” exerted a powerful influence over Western science for centuries, and while dismissed by most neuroscientists today, still feeds the popular belief in mind as a magical, transcendent quality.

A contemporary of Descartes named Thomas Willis—often referred to as the father of neurology—was the first to suggest that not only was the brain itself the locus of the mind, but that different parts of the brain give rise to specific cognitive functions.

Early 19th-century phrenologists pushed this notion in a quaint direction, proposing that personality proclivities could be deduced by feeling the bumps on a person’s skull, which were caused by the brain “pushing out” in places where it was particularly well developed.

Plaster casts of the heads of executed criminals were examined and compared to a reference head to determine whether any particular protuberances could be reliably associated with criminal behavior.

Though absurdly unscientific even for its time, phrenology was remarkably prescient—up to a point. In the past decade especially, advanced technologies for capturing a snapshot of the brain in action have confirmed that discrete functions occur in specific locations.

The neural “address” where you remember a phone number, for instance, is different from the one where you remember a face, and recalling a famous face involves different circuits than remembering your best friend’s.

Yet it is increasingly clear that cognitive functions cannot be pinned to spots on the brain like towns on a map.

A given mental task may involve a complicated web of circuits, which interact in varying degrees with others throughout the brain—not like the parts in a machine, but like the instruments in a symphony orchestra combining their tenor, volume, and resonance to create a particular musical effect.

Citroen C – Crosser

The Citroen C-Crosser is the same car as the Mitsubishi Outlander and Peugeot’s 4007 – they’re identical but with different tinsel. Doesn’t make them bad though. Manufactured by Mitsubishi, they make a lot of sense.

Comfort
Firmly sprung but well damped, Citroen’s first 4×4 (ish) since the 2CV Mehari variant makes for a decent motorway companion. When things work this well and you don’t pay very much dynamically, the high driving position becomes a boon you get to like.

Performance
The 2.2-litre four-pot turbo diesel in the C-Crosser is a gem. It may only have 154bhp, but the car punts from rest to 62mph in just under 10 seconds and can overtake and ride the motorways with ease. A terminal speed of 124mph is perfectly achievable but unnecessary.

Cool
Acceptable parked on the drive, though don’t expect a C-Crosser to get you laid unless you live in a really rough town.

Quality
All the variants of this car are built by Mitsubishi, so although the C-Crosser is built with the exacting standards of the Japanese, it won’t win many design awards. Feels good inside though.

Handling
Very, very car-like, the C-Crosser has a well-judged chassis set-up that makes it genuinely fun to drive. It doesn’t get distracted by bumps and can be made to dispense quite a lot of speed on tight roads. Decent steering and strong brakes help.

Practicality
Pop-up kid’s seats in the back are a stroke of genius for families with kids and friends and kit to transport. The boot’s also big with just five to seat – it’ll hold 770litres. As an all-round car it’s hard to pick fault.

Running costs
Insurance at Group 12 feels steep, but around 40mpg is a nice surprise for an SUV, even a soft one. Not in the highest VED band for tax – but it’ll still hit you for £200 a year.

Classic Suspensor Trunk

These trunks make other boxer briefs seem boring. They come in stretch cotton and are offered in a variety of colors. I have red ones. The first time I wore them I went to the gym–they are great to wear under gym shorts.

Microfiber Suspensor Trunk

This microfiber ‘Suspensor’ trunk is made from a lightweight, super-stretchy microfiber and features a contour pouch that offers added ‘lift.’ They come in three colors. I have a pair and love how they hug my body. I recommend buying as size up since they do run a bit small.

Bi-Color Suspensor Trunk

These trunks are so fun looking and they are made of stretch cotton. They are super flattering, at least visually, probably because of the way the two colors are sewn together. Very slimming.

Fresco Trunk

This sheer mesh and microfiber trunk is not for everyone and are probably something you would wear when you are feeling a little sexy.

Ciclo Boxer Brief

These fun striped trunks are really soft and comfy. They have a body-hugging design in a classic boxer brief cut. These you could wear every day.

Classic Suspensor Brief
